The Guard - 2011
 / 10
Sergeant Gerry Boyle (Brendan Gleeson) is a small-town Irish cop with a confrontational personality, a subversive sense of humor, a dying mother, a fondness for prostitutes, and absolutely no interest whatsoever in the international cocaine-smuggling ring that has brought straight-laced FBI agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle) to his door.

Written and directed by John Michael McDonagh (Ned Kelly), this is an Irish-set comedy thriller featuring Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges), and Don Cheadle (CrashHotel Rwanda).

The film also stars Mark Strong, Liam Cunningham, Fionnula Flanagan, David Wilmot, Rory Keenan, Pat Shortt, and newcomer Katarina Cas.

The Guard is a Reprisal Films and Element Pictures production in association with Prescience, Aegis Film Fund, UK Film Council and Crescendo Productions and with the participation of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board.

The Guard has won 14 awards, including the Guardian First Film Award, Evening Standard Peter Sellers Award for Comedy, 5 IFTAS, and 3 Dinard British Film Festival Awards; and had 22 nominations, including BAFTA Best Original Screenplay and Golden Globe Best Actor (Comedy or Musical).
